Cinvestav urges dialogue between authorities and Conacyt scientists

Members of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Cinvestav) expressed their rejection of the insistence of the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) by obtain arrest warrants against 31 scientists of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) and they called for a dialogue between the authorities and the scientific and academic community.

“In relation to the most recent request of the FGR to issue arrest warrants against 31 people from the scientific community, former Conacyt officials and employees of the Scientific and Technological Forum, we express, as members of CINVESTAV, our strong rejection of this act , we demand the criminal withdrawal and we urge dialogue between the authorities of this sector and the scientific and academic community ”, indicated the statement accompanied by more than 200 signatures of members of the center.

On August 24, the FGR requested the arrest warrants, but the judge asked him to reformulate his request, with 15 days to perfect it; the FGR filed it again and the judge refused to issue them. Now, the FGR analyzes again if it requests the order for the same crimes or others.

Among the 31 academics, former directors of the Conacyt and from Scientific Advisory Forum, who have been charged with organized crime and money laundering.

In a statement made this week, the College of Directors of Faculties and Schools of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) They added their rejection of the persecution undertaken by the FGR and warned that this situation generates a climate of mistrust and lynching towards these people.

In the document, the academics, including the Secretary General of UNAM, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, expressed their support for the message issued on September 22, 2021 by the rector of UNAM, Enrique Luis Graue Wiechers , and agreed to consider it absurd and inconceivable to accuse the academics and officials involved of criminal association.

“The public institutions in charge of the generation and transmission of knowledge and the dissemination of culture, including the National Autonomous University of MexicoWe are aware of the trust that Mexican society has placed in us and the great effort it makes to finance our activities, so we exercise our resources in a transparent manner, within the framework of the law, applying the best national and international practices, and we are audited and inspected on a daily and strict basis by organs of the different powers of the State. In this context, the disproportionate accusation of 31 academics and officials who were related to the Scientific and Technological Consultative Forum in previous administrations “, expressed the directors of the faculties of the highest house of studies in the country.

Finally, they trusted in the correct application of the laws, the administration of justice and respect for the fundamental rights of the aforementioned academics, and stressed that only through adequate and respectful interaction between the academy and the government can we aspire to a more humane science and at the service of society.
