In the summer, at their vacation spot, far from the office and their usual doctor, the first instinct of many patients is often to go to the emergency room in the event of health problems. The emergencies of this hospital, located near the Arcachon basin (Gironde), are experiencing the same difficulties as at the national level: an increase in the number of patients, and, at the same time, a significant shortage of caregivers. The number of emergency physicians is down.
Saturated emergencies
So, to avoid closing the service, general practitioners were hired. Posted in prefabs, they treat minor injuries every day, from 9 a.m. to midnight. The management of the hospital advocates the benefits of the complementarity between city medicine and hospital structure, and is already anticipating its staffing needs for next summer. In 2021, there were 20 million emergency room visits in France, a figure that has doubled in 25 years.
