The US civil rights organization NAACP has warned members of minorities of possible dangers when vacationing in Florida. The policy under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis there is “openly hostile to African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ people,” said the NACCP, one of the leading organizations of the black civil rights movement in the United States.
The English abbreviation LGBTQI+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans people, queer and intersex people – the plus sign is a placeholder for other identities and genders. People of color are people who are not perceived as white and Western.
Before the NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which campaigns for the rights of Hispanic people, and Equality Florida, a gay rights organization, had issued similar travel advice for Florida. Tourism is an important economic factor in the US state.
No comment from Ron De Santis
The statement, adopted by the NAACP Board of Directors on Saturday, cautioned that before traveling to Florida, tourists should be aware that the state disparages and marginalizes the contributions and challenges faced by African Americans and people of color.
When asked on Sunday, the DeSantis office initially did not comment. The governor is expected to announce his candidacy in the Republican primary in the coming days. He is considered the most promising competitor of ex-President Donald Trump.
