A colorfully painted guitar belonging to blues and rock legend Eric Clapton (“Layla”) was auctioned in the USA for 1.27 million dollars (1.17 million euros). According to auction house Julien’s, this is a record price for a guitar by the British musician at auction. Clapton, now 78, played the 1964 Gibson electric guitar during his time with the rock band Cream.
The guitar known as “The Fool” stands out with its psychedelic, colorful painting. The auction took place on Thursday evening (local time) in Nashville (US state of Tennessee). According to a statement from Julien’s, entrepreneur, collector and owner of the Indianapolis Colts football club Jim Irsay is the new owner.
The auction was part of the three-day “Played, Worn and Torn: Rock N’ Roll Iconic Guitars and Memorabilia” auction, which featured more than 1,000 pieces owned by music greats such as Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, Prince, The Beatles and others until Saturday evening Frank Zappa will be offered.
