Clarification from the Food and Drug Administration regarding the toxic substance present in cinnamon and its effect on human health

Al-Marsad Newspaper: The Food and Drug Authority in Saudi Arabia stated, through its official account on the “Twitter” website, that there are two types of cinnamon, namely Ceylon Cinnamon and Cassia Cinnamon.

The authority pointed out that it is allowed to use both types. The second type, Cassia Cinnamon, is the most widely used in food products. With regard to toxicity, it is caused by the presence of coumarin, the use of which in large quantities and for a long time leads to negative effects on human health.

The second type of cinnamon contains more coumarin than the first type, Ceylon Cinnamon.

Scientific reports indicate that the consumption of cinnamon of the second type as a spice in food, and in the accepted ways, may not lead to health problems.

However, the FDA recommends moderation in the consumption of drinks and foods that contain type II cinnamon, in order to avoid any health symptoms that may occur as a result of consuming a higher amount of coumarin than recommended.
