In the north-east of Mali, clashes continue between the Malian army and the rebels united within a coalition called CSP-PSD. The latter declared on Saturday that they had abandoned their position around the town of Anéfis (112 km from Kidal), while for their part the Malian Armed Forces claimed to have taken control of this important town.

According to a spokesperson for the Malian army, early this Saturday, October 8, regular troops took total control of the town of Anéfis by controlling its main roads.

For their part, the ex-rebels gathered on the ground within the coalition called Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development (CSP-PSD) are nuanced: they rather claim to have abandoned their positions in Anéfis to avoid collateral damage against civilian populations. They accuse Russian mercenaries from the Wagner company and Malian troops “ abuses against civilians ».

After the Anéfis stage, eyes are turned towards the locality of Kidal located 112 km further north-east and under the control of the ex-rebels as well as those of Aguelok and Tessalit. The Malian army’s plan is now official: Take control in all the former areas where Minusma is established, which is due to leave Mali at the end of the year. On the ground, observers predict further clashes between the belligerents.
