An elderly woman died following employees of a nursing home in the American city of San Francisco offered dishwashing liquid instead of their usual juice, according to the website “”KRON4” the local.
The site stated that 3 ambulances arrived at the “Atria Park Retirement Center” in the San Mateo area, on Saturday, according to the local rescue forces.
The supervisors of the center confirmed in a statement to the site that three people were taken to the hospital following a mother “was given dishwashing liquid as juice.”
The site spoke to Marcia Cochin, the daughter of Gertwood Maxwell, 93, who died as a result of the accident, and stated that the center called her to inform her that her mother was on her way to the hospital following taking a substance.
She told the website that her mother arrived at the hospital with ulcers on her mouth, throat, and esophagus, and stated that the center told her that what she had taken was an “alkaline solution for cleaning that destroys proteins”, and the medical staff might not do anything to treat the sores, as she put it.
At first, ambulance workers thought elderly people with dementia drank the liquid on their own, but Cochin ruled it out, saying that was impossible in her mother’s health condition.
“Many people, like my mother, have to hold the cup to her lips and turn it over in her mouth to be able to drink,” she explained.
