London’s legendary urban forest—frequently celebrated as the largest urban canopy in the world—faces an existential crisis, with over 70% of its public trees at severe risk of dying by the end of the century due to escalating climate change impacts, according to a joint report by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the Greater London Authority.

Scientists assessing over one million public trees warn that rising temperatures are already causing structural decay, branch drop, and crown dieback across the city, according to findings from the South London News.

The joint investigation by Kew Gardens and the Greater London Authority evaluated a dataset of 1.2 million public trees across the capital. The research determined that 62 per cent of the city’s tree stock currently demonstrates “low suitability” for the climate conditions projected for London by 2090 if greenhouse gas emissions are not curtailed. Furthermore, an additional 11 per cent of the analyzed public canopy is already categorized as acutely “vulnerable” to mortality.

This physiological damage is no longer a distant projection but an active operational crisis. To highlight the ongoing damage, Kew Gardens preserved the structural frame of a dead red oak, painting it red as a visual marker of climate impacts ahead of Climate Action Week.

The toll of extreme weather is visible down to the individual branch level in community spaces and local orchards. In the middle of a heat wave and severe drought in Britain, Divya Hariramani was pruning a plum tree in south London when she noticed a primary limb beginning to split completely from the trunk. Workers at the Mitcham Community Orchard told her the fruit tree was stressed.

“Because of the heat essentially. Like, when the trees can’t provide enough water to its parts and like some parts will just drop,” said Divya Hariramani, who documents fruit trees and the people who tend to them across the city on a social media account called Fruity Walks.

The environmental strain coincided with the driest July on record in Britain, during which virtually no rain fell. Farmers lost crops, warned of food shortages, and had to dip into winter feed reserves for cattle, while wildfires prompted emergency cellphone alerts. In the urban environment, park grass turned yellow and brittle, and trees dropped their leaves prematurely, creating a false autumn effect in the middle of summer.

“From most projections, we’re expecting the climate in London in 2050 to look more like Barcelona’s is now,” Joe Richomme, a botanical horticulturist at Kew Gardens, told CBC on a recent visit to Kew’s Carbon Garden, where 35 trees and 6,500 plants have been selected to show how different species respond to changing conditions.

Richomme explained that Kew has been exploring what types of tree species could fare better in hotter, drier weather, while also being able to withstand England’s notorious wetter winters. Native species like the English oak have struggled intensely in the heat, though researchers note that some specimens have adapted to grow in warmer places, such as the southern United States.

As urban trees operate as vital neighborhood buffers across London—mitigating the urban heat island effect, absorbing stormwater runoff, and anchoring soil structures—the push to adapt the capital’s canopy remains a race against time.
