climate resilience and energy transition under debate

AA / Abidjan / Fulbert Yao

The 2022 edition of the Civil Society Forum organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB) opened Thursday in Abidjan.

Placed under the theme “Engaging civil society for climate resilience and a just energy transition in Africa”, it will end on Friday, October 7, 2022.

This forum is the platform for constructive dialogue between the AfDB and civil society organizations (CSOs) on the challenges and opportunities of the climate and energy agenda, ahead of COP27.

At the end of the Forum, a joint roadmap will be adopted for this purpose.

The President of the African Development Bank (Bad) Adesina Akinwimi stressed in his speech that “climate change is devastating African economies”.

According to him, “Africa loses between 15 and 16 billion dollars annually, due to the devastating effects of climate change, an amount which is expected to reach 50 billion dollars per year by 2030.”

Also according to Adesina, “African countries will need an average of 125 billion USD per year, between 2020 and 2030, to be able to adapt to climate change”.

For Adesina Akinwimi “the AfDB is convinced that the involvement of civil society is essential for inclusive and sustainable development that can really improve the lives of African citizens”.

“I see civil society as a partner,” he maintained, inviting it, on the eve of COP 27, to “focus on the need for developed countries to live up to their promise of $100 billion a year.

Under the theme of climate change, the 2022 Forum focuses on four sub-themes, namely: Building climate resilience and supporting rural development; the role of local networks and community organizations; Gender and Climate Finance: From Obstacles to Achievable Solutions; Inclusive and Transformative Food Systems in Africa: Coping with Climate Change and Adaptation for Local Farming Communities/Smallholder Farmers; and Just Energy Transition: Roles of the African Development Bank, African Civil Society and Other Stakeholders.
