Nyambe: Military junta in Niger closes country’s airspace. The military junta’s move was to reject an ultimatum by the Association of West African Nations to restore power to ousted President Mohamed Basoom. Military regime spokesman General Amadou Abdurrahmane said the airspace was being closed due to the possibility of military action led by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The airspace is closed until further notice. The spokesman alleged that forces had been pre-deployed in two Central African countries to intervene in Niger. However, he did not specify which countries.
ECOWAS has given Niger until Sunday to reinstate the ousted president. ECOWAS has not yet commented on the next steps. ECOWAS imposed economic and travel sanctions on Niger following the military coup.
