Coalition surprisingly agrees on rent cap – economic policy

2023-08-29 18:17:53

Vienna – Immediately before the special session of the National Council on inflation requested by the SPÖ and FPÖ, the governing parties agreed on a package of measures. This was confirmed to the STANDARD by top representatives from the ranks of the governing parties on Tuesday evening. A rent cap is planned for the next three years, i.e. 2024 to 2026, which should limit the increase in rents to a maximum of five percent. In other words, rents must not rise more than this five percent per year. The regulation should probably not apply to all tenants on the private housing market, but only to benchmark and category rents and cooperatives.
