Cody Rhodes reflects on his 2022 Hell in a Cell clash with Seth Rollins.
The American Nightmare reflected on this classic encounter during a recent interview with Chris Van Vilet, where he began by massively praising Rollins for being a great wrestler and for making a mysterious decision that day that Cody is for. eternally grateful.
Oh, I feel like, Oh, man. I feel like because the rivalry between Seth and me is real, and real. I don’t want to tell you how amazing it is, it’s just, it’s fair to say. Seth is, I can’t even begin to tell you how good Seth Rollins is as a wrestler, in-ring psychologist. And without going overboard, Seth made a decision that day that he made, it was his decision to make, it will always be something that I’m grateful for.
Cody later says that he and Rollins are not friends, but that he will one day write a book about the Visionary’s value to WWE and the wrestling industry. He adds that he is grateful to have such a good sparring partner in his quest for the top spot on Monday Night Raw.
Seth and I are not friends. It doesn’t look like we’re headed for friendship. There was some flirting with her. Don’t think that will happen. All that aside, if I ever write a book one day, an entire chapter will be dedicated to just how good this guy is and how super valuable he is to WWE. And it’s still undervalued, in my opinion. And having Monday nights with him and me in a nice, competitive who the guy is, without ever having to be in the ring with each other. I couldn’t ask for a better sparring partner in this sense. I never want to fight Seth again. But that day, he made a decision that was very important. And if you get it, ask him because I still don’t want to say nice things about him.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cody opened up about meeting Vince McMahon after he left AEW and before returning to WWE.
Cody recalls the meeting feeling very casual and conversational, and Vince quoting and praising him for the things he had accomplished outside of WWE.
That’s a good question, I think he laughed. He has it like, [imite Vince en riant] I think he laughed. Because I somehow snuck in. But I like leaning on him, and I think he kind of laughed. I remember going to talk to him. I was fearless and almost overcompensated. I was very adamant like, I’m not, I’ve used the Bernie Mac reference a bunch, but he comes out and the crowd kind of boos him, he tells me he’s not afraid of them . That’s really where I was. It’s like we’re good. Not afraid of anything here, let’s talk about it. And I was almost overcompensating because Vince and Bruce were so welcoming. So that’s the term I can use, sweet, and so positive about what I had done. And the fact that they knew what I had done and were actually quoting different things, like I saw that, I saw that, I couldn’t believe it. It was very affirmative.
Cody later states that the meeting didn’t seem to be one until the last 30 seconds, where Vince introduced him to what he would be doing at WrestleMania 38, that he was going to wrestle Seth Rollins.
And it happened like this kind of happy go lucky. We’re talking about, I was, you know, Liberty was a year old or maybe not even then. And he talks to me about what it’s like to be a you know, a father to a daughter and how special it is, it was just beautiful. And then like in the last 20 seconds of the meeting, it was Seth Rollins at WrestleMania, you know, that’s where the only thing happened. And it was, I told Brandi I would say this, but I was adamant about saying please don’t make it one of those hey, that’s the deal, if you leave it off the table, don’t make it one of those. I have to go and think about it. I have to. And even in your mind, you’re like yeah, I think we’re gonna do it. Even your mind, I have to think about it and take some time because man, we had made such massive decisions. And I’m kind of a career guy with a left turn, he wouldn’t do that, well, he did that. So this one was going to be something similar but really special. I didn’t feel like I was in a meeting until the last 30 seconds.
