Coffee Prices Surge: Hungary Sees 12% Monthly Increase

The price of ground coffee in Hungary has surged by 12 percent in the past month, representing a 200 forint increase, according to recent data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The price hike, detailed in a report by Pénzcentrum, is attributed to international market dynamics and may signal further increases to come. Alongside coffee, prices for several other essential food items have also risen sharply. Citron prices have seen the most significant year-on-year increase, climbing from 1030 forints to 1350 forints per kilogram – a 31.1 percent jump.

Packaged household biscuits have also experienced substantial price increases, with 800-1000 gram packages rising by 24.5 percent from 1100 forints to 1370 forints. Cucumbers now average over 2000 forints per kilogram, a 24.2 percent increase, representing a 390 forint per kilogram rise. The price of a 80-100 gram chocolate bar with hazelnuts has increased from 603 forints to 737 forints, a 22.2 percent increase.

The monthly increase in coffee prices has outpaced overall inflation, with the 200-250 gram package rising from an average of 1690 forints in January to 1890 forints in February. This represents an 11.8 percent increase, or 200 forints per package. The price increase for coffee is 118 times greater than the average monthly inflation rate experienced in Hungary between January and February 2026, according to Pénzcentrum.

Green peppers and tomatoes also saw significant price increases, rising by 9.3, and 8.3 percent respectively during the same period.
