Colliers Healthcare Report: UAE’s Growing Demand for Doctors and Nurses in 2030

Colliers: exceeded 120,000 in 2020, a growth of 128% in 10 years

A report issued by Colliers Healthcare on “Medical Education in the Region Between Opportunities and Challenges” indicated that “the UAE has witnessed a significant increase in the number of health care workers, but the markets require an increase in the number of experienced doctors and nurses, especially local health care professionals.” Pointing out that the demand exceeds 47,000 new doctors and nurses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai by 2030.

According to the report, the number of medical personnel in the UAE increased during the 10 years (2011-2020) by 128%, from 52,925 doctors, nurses and medical assistants to 120,763. The number of doctors working in the public and private sectors increased to 26,736 doctors by the end of 2020, compared to 12,856 doctors in 2011. With a growth of 107.9% or 13,880 doctors, the number of dentists increased to 6,860 compared to 3,000 doctors, a growth of 128.6% or 3,860 doctors, and in nursing to 59,043 nurses, compared to 25,550 nurses during the comparison period, with a growth of 131% or 33,493 nurses.

In terms of health assistants, the number increased from 11,519 in 2011 to 28,124 in 2020, an increase of 144%.

The report revealed that «the ratio of doctors and nurses per 1,000 people in the UAE is 2.9 and 6.4, respectively, which is higher than the average in the GCC countries.

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has the highest percentage of doctors and nurses compared to the population (10,417 doctors – 27,193 nurses), and in the northern regions (10,376 doctors – 5,358 nurses), while there are (5,358 doctors – 18,997 nurses) in Dubai. Colliers forecasts indicate that “about 15,000 nurses and medical assistants are required in the UAE, in addition to 6,000 doctors and 11,000 nurses in Dubai by 2030.”

This means that the total requirement is 21,000 new doctors and 26,000 male and female nurses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai by 2030.

As for the medical specialties most in demand in Abu Dhabi, according to the health workforce plan in Abu Dhabi: psychiatry, emergency medicine, radiation therapy oncology, intensive care, and orthopedics. With regard to the specializations of health assistants that are most in demand, they are: psychiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, laboratory technicians, and emergency technicians.

As for the medical specialties most in demand in Dubai, according to the Dubai Health Authority’s clinical services capacity plan, they are: “obstetrics, general medicine, endocrinology, general surgery, cardiology, pediatrics, nephrology and anesthesiology.”
