Colombia: At least eight dead after plane crash in residential area

The mayor of the city, Daniel Quintero, said that all the capacities of the administration have been activated to help the victims; the aircraft was heading from Medellín to the municipality of Pizarro, in Chocó.

At least eight deaths is the initial balance given by the authorities of the plane crash that occurred this Monday morning in the city of Medellín, when an aircraft crashed to the ground in Belén Rosales, an important residential sector of the capital of Antioquia.

Six passengers and two crew members were traveling in the plane. The last reported hour in the air was at 10:14 am bound for Pizarro in the department of El Chocó.

The first authority of the city, the mayor Daniel Quintero wrote on his Twitter account: “The accident of a small plane has occurred in the Belén Rosales sector. All the capacities of the administration have been activated to help the Victims”, he stated.

“When taking off, it reports engine failure, it is not enough to return to the Olaya Herrera airport,” he added.

The Dgrd of Medellín explained that “four machines with 15 units of the Official Medellín Fire Department support the work of attention in the emergency presented in Belén Rosales, where a small plane fell on a house in the sector. There are also aeronautical firefighters on the site,” they said.

Civil aviation also immediately issued a statement to public opinion about the situation presented.

“Civil Aeronautics informs that a team of experts from the Technical Directorate for Accident Investigation of Civil Aeronautics is investigating the causes of the accident of the PA-31 type aircraft, registration HK 5121, which covered the Medellín-Pizarro (Chocó) route. According to the facts, the aircraft crashed after takeoff, in the Belén neighborhood of Medellín. The reaction teams from the Olaya Herrera airport are at the site of the event, verifying the condition of the occupants. Aerocivil will inform in a timely manner, and through official channels, about what happened”.

The governor of Antioquia also joined the pronouncements: “The plane crash in Bethlehem has us in shock. We raise prayers for the health of the affected people and for the firefighters who attend to the emergency with search and rescue work, ”he said.
