Colombian President’s Son Arrested: Lawsuit, Money Laundering, and Political Scandal

(CNN Spanish) – Nicolás Fernando Petro Burgos, eldest son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, is immersed in a great judicial and political mess. He was arrested on Saturday for an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office that began in March of this year for allegations of alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering.

In the same capture operation, Daysuris del Carmen Vásquez Castro, his ex-wife, was arrested and who exposed the alleged illegal acts in which Nicolás Petro would have incurred. Vásquez faces charges of money laundering and violation of personal data, according to the Colombian prosecutor’s office.

Vásquez stated in an interview with the magazine Week that the president’s son received large sums of money from drug traffickers, politicians and other individuals investigated and convicted of corruption to finance his father’s campaign in 2022.

He stated that the president had no knowledge of the money and its origin, and that these sums never reached the political campaign.

Since the beginning of the investigations, Nicolás Petro Burgos has denied the accusations against him, stating that they are political and personal attacks that seek to destroy the work he has achieved in his career.

Last March, President Gustavo Petro met with the Attorney General, Francisco Barbosa, and asked him to get to the bottom of the matter. A position that was maintained this Saturday when the Prosecutor’s Office announced the captures. Petro pointed out on his Twitter account that as President of the Republic he will ensure that Colombian justice has all the guarantees to proceed in accordance with the law.

Nicolás Petro is a deputy of the Assembly of the department of Atlántico.

According to his profile in the website of the Assembly, was born on June 21, 1986 in the municipality of Ciénaga de Oro, Córdoba. In that municipality he attended primary and secondary school.

He studied law at the Pontifical Bolivarian University. He has a master’s degree in Climate Change from the Universidad Iberoamericana and a master’s degree in Government and Public Management for Latin America from the Pompeu Fabra University, in Barcelona.

Once settled in the city of Barranquilla, he took the reins of Colombia Humana, his father’s political movement.

Petro Burgos aspired to the governorship of Atlántico in 2018, coming in second, which led him to occupy a seat in the departmental Assembly. He is part of the board of directors of the assembly with the position of second vice president.
