Colombian soccer player Hugo Rodallega denounced receiving racist insults on Tuesday, during the Copa Sudamericana match that his Santa Fe de Bogotá team lost 1-0 as a visitor to Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.
After the match played at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo stadium in La Plata, the 37-year-old striker declared, through tears, that the local fans called him “black” and “monkey” during an altercation between members of both teams in the first half, which resulted in four expulsions.
“We do not improve as humanity. It is a disaster what is happening in the world. It’s sad to come. I am not saying that we lost because people offend, but the issue of racism is already tiring, ”she pointed out. “That they call you mono and black is disrespectful and sad.”
The accusations made by the former Colombian national team come at a time when a new similar case has triggered a scandal in Spanish soccer. On Sunday, the Brazilian Vinicius Junior, who like Rodallega is black, was the victim of insults from various Valencia fans.
On the day, the national police in Spain arrested seven suspects, both for the racist expressions on Sunday against the Madrid player and for having posted an image of the player months ago from a highway bridge in the Spanish capital.
Growing out of Deportes Quindío, Rodallega has played abroad for Monterrey, Atlas and Necaxa in Mexico, as well as Wigan and Fulham in England. He has also played in Turkish soccer and played with Colombia in the 2007 Copa América.
