In French Polynesia, it is the third most common cancer in men and the fourth in women. Colorectal cancer, or colon cancer, is the fifth cause of death in our territory. The Cancer Institute is therefore launching an awareness campaign. The ICPF recommends screening from the age of 50, for both men and women.

The Polynesian population does not seek advice early enough regarding cancer, particularly colorectal or colon cancer. This is the observation of Dr Nicolas Asesio, oncologist.

However, screening is the only way to diagnose cancer, and also to identify cancerous lesions, called polyps. These can be removed before they become diseased.

Colonoscopy consists of introducing a camera into the large intestine in order to identify possible polyps clinging to the walls. • ©Youtube

The oncologist explains to us: “This screening is extremely important because it truly saves lives. Since we will avoid finding ourselves at a very advanced stage of cancer, that is to say metastatic or which is not curable. Knowing that with a colonoscopy, we can detect cancer and subsequently operate on it. This therefore makes it possible to avoid a large number of inconveniences for patients, such as chemotherapy and repeated hospitalizations linked to cancer.

The cancer institute is launching an awareness campaign this month to explain what colorectal cancer is, what part of the body it affects, how to get screened, where and when.

It is recommended to consult as soon as symptoms such as the appearance of blood in the stools appear, especially if there are cases of colon cancer in the family. Otherwise, it is advisable to get screened from the age of 50, for both men and women.
