Italian police have identified a young Swiss woman they suspect carved her initials into a wall of the Colosseum in Rome on Friday. She risks a hefty fine.

Italian news agency ADN Kronos reported on Friday that an investigation was opened after an Italian guide filmed the 17-year-old woman with her smartphone carving the letter ‘N’ on a wall of the historic monument. .

The guide, who was accompanying a group at the time, was alerted by a tourist. He reported the case to Colosseum security personnel. The Swiss tourist risks a fine of up to 15,000 euros for degradation and deterioration of cultural property.

Sunday, the Italian agency reports that a young German, also 17 years old and on a school trip, was denounced and punished for depredation. On Saturday, he was caught carving on a wall of the Colosseum, causing a fragment of brick to detach.

Only a few weeks ago, another incident aroused the indignation of the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangennaro: a young tourist of Bulgarian origin residing in England had engraved his name and that of his girlfriend on a wall of the Colosseum. A video posted on the internet had sparked anger. The Bulgarian, who has since been the subject of a complaint, apologized but that didn’t spare him a hefty fine.
