Columbus Shootings: Juveniles Injured, Gun Violence Concerns Rise

Columbus police are investigating two separate shootings on the city’s East Side late Saturday night that involved multiple teenagers, prompting renewed concerns about youth violence and calls for increased community support. The incidents, occurring within less than a mile of each other near the site of the former Eastland Mall, underscore the ongoing challenges facing the city despite a recent decline in overall homicide rates.

The first shooting was reported around 11:45 p.m. In the 3900 block of Rivercreek Bay Way. Officers responding to the scene found a male juvenile with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Grant Hospital and is currently recovering, according to police. Less than an hour later, at approximately the same time, police responded to reports of a vehicle being shot at in the 3700 block of Petzinger Rd. The vehicle contained an adult driver and four juvenile passengers. The driver sustained minor injuries from glass fragments, although the four juveniles were unharmed.

Authorities have not yet determined if the two shootings are connected, and no suspects have been identified in either case. Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the Columbus Police Department.

Recent Uptick in Youth Violence

The shootings come amid growing concern from community advocates about a recent increase in young people being involved in gun violence. Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children, a local advocacy group, reported that at least six juveniles have been victims or witnesses to shootings in the past two weeks. “There’s trauma that’s involved with teenagers shooting one another,” said Malissa Thomas St. Clair, the founder of the organization. “We have to find solutions to handle the root.”

This latest violence as well follows an incident late last month where an East High School student was shot outside the Martin Luther King Jr. Library following an argument. 19-year-old Marsean Bowles has been arrested and charged in connection with that shooting and is currently being held on a $2 million bond, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

City Response and Prevention Efforts

Despite these recent incidents, Columbus has seen a positive trend in overall homicide rates. The city has recorded eight homicides so far in 2026, representing the lowest year-to-date total in more than a decade. Community buy-in has been credited with this decrease. However, advocates emphasize the necessitate to proactively address the factors contributing to youth violence, particularly as warmer weather and the end of the school year approach.

Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children is urging parents to ensure firearms are stored securely and to have open conversations with their children about the consequences of violence. “What we have is the prelude to summer which means a lot of lives lost. A lot of lives young potentially lost. A lot of young lives in jail,” Thomas St. Clair warned.

The Columbus City Council is considering a proposal to allocate $850,000 towards summer youth programming. Advocates believe that providing appealing and engaging opportunities for young people is crucial to diverting them from violence and offering positive alternatives. “Even just giving them something fun to do, so we have to match the energy of what the streets are offering,” a speaker stated.

As Columbus grapples with these latest shootings, the focus remains on preventing future incidents and supporting the city’s youth. The upcoming City Council vote on summer programming represents a potential step forward in addressing the root causes of violence and providing young people with the resources they need to thrive. Anyone with information regarding these shootings is encouraged to contact the Columbus Police Department.
