The Minister of Telecommunications, Petra De Sutter, announced Thursday that from mid-October, GSM users would receive significantly fewer fraudulent SMS messages.
According to Minister Vooruit, Proximus tested the new version of the software to block SMS messages from scammers. Result: six times more false SMS messages were detected.

“From mid-October, we will ensure that there are no more victims of SMS phishing. The testing phase of the new version of the anti-smishing software was already promising,” said the minister, in a press release.

“Already today, telecommunications operators are stopping fake SMS messages for their customers, but sometimes some still slip through the cracks. We are in the process of refining this net: software that will automatically trigger an alarm if a number sends a suspicious number of SMS messages. This will allow telecommunications operators to intervene immediately,” added Ms De Sutter.

According to the minister, the financing necessary for the development of this software will come from the recovery funds released by Europe. Proximus and Telenet are stakeholders.

Still according to Petra De Sutter, in 2022, 39.8 million euros were stolen by phishing in Belgium. These are not only fake SMS messages, but also fraudulent emails. These numbers are much higher than in 2021 since it was then a question of a stolen amount of 25 million euros, according to the sectoral federation of banks Febelfin.
