Combiner Lamparter’s preparation for the season was almost perfect

Overall World Cup winner Johannes Lamparter has had very good preparation. In contrast to the previous two years with high school diploma, appendectomy and military service, the Nordic combined athlete was able to complete the planned training well this year and feels prepared for the start of the World Cup next week in Ruka. It was only three years ago when he achieved his first World Cup podium place there in second place. Two more second places followed in Ruka two years ago.

Lamparter was a long way from missing victory there last year when he finished a maximum of seventh in three races, but of course he knows the reason for that. “I wasn’t mentally ready. And if you get off to a bad start, you won’t get better over the weekend,” said the 22-year-old, who has been 22 for a week, at an international press conference this week. “But now the self-confidence is there, both disciplines are going well. I haven’t had any illnesses, the season can come.”

Last season, Lamparter won bronze medals in three of four World Cup races and podium finishes in twelve of 22 World Cup races. In addition to a third and four second places, he increased his quota of World Cup successes to ten with seven victories. This season he could definitely reach the marks of Mario Stecher (12) and Klaus Sulzenbacher (14), only Felix Gottwald with 23 World Cup victories is ahead of him in the all-time red-white-red overall statistics.

Like Lamparter, only Jens Luraas Oftebro and Julian Schmid competed in all 22 World Cup and four World Cup races last season; the Norwegian and the German then finished second and third behind Lamparter in the World Cup. “It was a lot of stress,” the rumer remembers. “After the season it wasn’t easy, so I took a break.” But at the beginning of April he was back on skis in Norway.

The ÖSV team did its job especially in jumping, as Lamparter emphasized on Tuesday on the journey home from Davos, where the focus was on fine-tuning cross-country skiing. The journey to the “cold winter wonderland Ruka”, as Lamparter called it, takes place on Tuesday for the ÖSV combined athletes as well as the cross-country skiers and ski jumpers. On Friday next week, the men’s new compact format will mark the start of a season with Lamparter as defending champion.

But the double world champion from Oberstdorf doesn’t want to expose himself to the resulting pressure in 2021. “I won the overall World Cup and can now enjoy it. I know where I stand and you will see where the other people are internationally. I have done everything to ensure that I am successful and I am confident that top performances can emerge .” Motivation also brings third place in Austria’s sports poll: “That makes me incredibly proud.”

The season will continue after Ruka in Lillehammer and will also end in Scandinavia in March, when we will go to Lahti and Oslo for the dress rehearsal for the 2025 World Cup in Trondheim. However, Lamparter’s most important date in the competition calendar for the interim year is Seefeld. “The triple will be my little highlight – especially because there is no World Cup.” The triumph at his training facility at the end of January this year was “so emotional”. “It’s something very special.”

Despite all the positive sporting developments, Lamparter still had to cope with various blows of fate. Two people died at home, two from the team environment. In addition to an ÖSV service man, these deaths affected the wife of head coach Christoph Eugen. Lamparter: “It was quite a tough time, it wasn’t easy.”

Eugen is entering his twelfth season in his role and, in this difficult time for him, he now plans to return to the team in mid-December for the third World Cup of the season in Ramsau. Until then, the Styrian will be in constant contact with his assistant coaches, according to the ÖSV. Christoph Bieler is initially in charge of the jump and cross-country ski trail for on-site competitions. “Christoph (Eugen, note) was the leader for so many years,” said the Tyrolean. “Now we have to stand together.”
