“What night is without moon? Where is there no bamboo and cypress? But there are few idle people like the two of us.”

This is the scene of the evening talk around the firewood in the “2023 Year-End Lecture”. A sentence from Su Shi’s “Night Tour of Chengtian Temple” shared by Wanwan and Haoyuan resonated with the guests at the scene. Fu Sheng lamented that our culture is very romantic. Kong Xiangdong believes that this is a time-traveling “night talk around the stove.”

So what they mentioned

What kind of artistic conception is described? Let’s understand the full text of Su Shi’s “A Night Tour at Chengtian Temple”.

On the night of October 12th, the sixth year of Yuanfeng, I took off my clothes and was about to fall asleep. When the moonlight came into my house, I happily set off. Thinking of nothing and being happy, I went to Chengtian Temple to look for Zhang Huaimin. Huai Min also stayed up and walked with each other in the atrium. Under the courtyard, the sky is clear as if there were accumulated water. The water is covered with algae and cypress shadows. What night is there without a moon? Where are there no bamboos or cypresses? But there are few idle people like the two of us.

Vernacular translation:

On the night of October 12, the sixth year of Yuanfeng (AD 1083), I took off my clothes and was about to go to bed when I suddenly saw the moonlight shining in from the window. So I got up excitedly and prepared to go out to admire the moon.

Considering that happiness alone is not as good as happiness among everyone, I immediately ran to Chengtian Temple and knocked on Zhang Huaimin’s door. Fortunately, he hasn’t slept yet. So, the two of us went to the middle of the courtyard to enjoy the moon.

The moonlight shines on the ground in front of the court, like a puddle of water, clear and empty. Algae and waterlilies are crisscrossed among them. In fact, they are not real algae and waterlilies, but reflections of cypress and bamboo.

Which night is there without a bright moon? Which place doesn’t have bamboo and cypress? But opportunities like tonight rarely come around. At this moment, both of us feel the same way.

In this way, Su Shi’s night visit to Zhang Huaimin is like our night talk around the fire today.

Tonight at 7:00, come and chat around the stove to find your Zhang Huaimin!
