Comedian Fred Florusse (1938-2023) cherished his Zeeland roots | Flushing

Florusse was born in 1938 in Vlissingen, where his father worked at De Schelde. His great passion was the theatre. At a young age he was active in Zeeland in the field of theatre, musical and operetta, including at theater association Het Vlissingsch Schouwspel. He was also one of the founders of the Walcherse Operetta and Musical Association.

For a long time Florusse thought it would remain a hobby. He specialized in business economics, accountancy and tax law and opened an administration office on the Kromme Weele in Middelburg. He closed that in 1966 in ‘a bad mood’, to start working at Philips in Eindhoven. There he was also active in the field of cabaret and theater.

Legendary cabaret group

In 1967 he was one of the founders of Don Quishocking, the legendary cabaret group. Until its breakup in 1982, the company made eleven programs. Florusse remained active as a presenter and actor. He also directed theater shows by Hans Dorrestijn, Paul de Leeuw and Karin Bloemen, among others. He was also one of the founders of the VARA radio program In de Rooie Haan.

Florusse lived in Amsterdam for many years, but cherished his Zeeland roots. “I also have a lot of Zeeland characteristics”, he said in 1998. “I am good with money and I am frugal in my own way. I also feel that I have both feet on the ground quite well. Yes, I am proud to be Zeeland.”
