Comedy Meets Noir: A Hilarious and Intriguing Theatrical Production with Great Characters

Accompanied on stage by Vito Sanz, Lorena López, Francisco Reyes and Amparo Fernández, the Catalan actress offers a comedy that delves into the noir genre at the Victoria Eugenia today at half past seven in the afternoon and tomorrow half an hour before to show a story that takes place in a half-empty tourist city as it is winter. Its author and director, Víctor Sánchez, defines it as a work “full of action and intrigue in which the characters gain ground over crime.”

– The work is presented as a ‘dramedy’, a mixture of comedy and drama.

– That’s right and it also has other interesting things in between. It is a tribute to the noir genre, through some rather sordid characters who are on the edge. They go through some very hard moments in life, but even so the work has a lot of humor. There is drama and comedy, but it is also grotesque and a hooligan comedy. It contains quite an eclectic mix.

– Sounds like very Iberian humour.

– She is a bit Berlanguian. Saving the distances of time and style, in this work, as in Azcona’s scripts, behind the comedy there is an immense tragedy in the characters.

– How is his character?

– She is a late-night woman who lives anchored in frustration. She had a splendid past, but she herself changed her destiny when she honestly decided to turn her life around. And from that moment, when the public will discover what happened, she lives or rather lives poorly in that kind of dormitory town. An abandoned city in winter that in summer is a place for parties and a lot of dispersion.

– Are we dealing with a detective story, police?

– No. There is a crime, but it is a pretext for the public to discover some absolutely memorable characters. The most important thing about this show are the characters and what their lives, their solitudes, tell. Because there is talk of loneliness, frustration, lost hopes. They represent a way of being in society with which the viewer can feel identified in many cases. But above all it is a very funny work, it has a very funny background.

– Come on, it’s not an Agatha Christie story

– No no. A definition of the function that I find funny and accurate was given to me by a friend. He told me that it is as if on a terrace, in the winter of Benidorm, Agatha Christie and David Lynch were having a coffee with milk and suddenly Tennessee Williams appeared and joined them for a snack.

– He also participates in the production. Does it interfere in any way with your work as an actress?

– No. In this case, I left everything in the hands of Octubre Producciones, I simply collaborated in the production, as I usually do. I always forget that I am a producer, when I am with my colleagues I am one more and when I am on stage I am the actress. Even when I produce by myself I have a virtue that I am very grateful for, I differentiate what production is from what acting is. And when I’m on stage and backstage I’m always the actress, I’m never the producer.

– How are these moments in the Spanish theater to produce?

– It is not a very good time because there are fewer tours. With the previous elections and now with the general ones it is going to be a debacle because the theaters are not being programmed as normally. We are also touring with ‘Blues and roots’, a multidisciplinary music and theater show. We have been in Mondragón and now we are going to Bilbao. I hope to tour the Basque Country a lot because black music has always been very popular in the Basque Country. There are many jazz blues festivals.

– How is?

– We mixed the history of black music and connected it with our culture through Federico García Lorca, when he was in New York and wrote ‘El rey de Harlem’ within ‘Poeta en Nueva York’. For the first time we have put blues music to a poem by Lorca. We are very happy to take this show throughout Spain.

– How do you feel about your age?

– It’s beginning to be that of a mature woman, but I don’t feel like that. I feel like a woman in full swing and right now I am starting out in the world of music from another perspective that is not that of an actress who sings, but that of a singer with a blues band. We are doing concerts in memorable places like the Café Central in Madrid, the Galileo Galilei room or at the Puerta del Sol on the 2nd of May party with the entire square full. It is never too late to turn your life around and do something different from what you have been preparing for for many years. This has given me such a powerful illusion that I feel as if I were 20 years old.

– Little is known about his involvement with music.

– It has always been very important, but I have not been able to dedicate myself to it. Maybe it would have been good music if I had studied in due time because I carry it inside. Lorca used to say that music sinks into your heart before words, that it is something that reaches you much deeper. And it seems to me that it is so. I can’t conceive of my life without music, but if I can also express myself through it now, it seems wonderful and a unique opportunity.

– Would you like to return to San Sebastián, but this time to sing at the jazz festival?

– Let’s see if I can do it next year. It can be in the format with a certain or in the theatrical format, within the programming of the jazz festival. We have both possibilities and who knows, maybe next year we can.
