Under the hood, this isn’t just a cosmetic overhaul. Standard iterations of the Commodore 64 Ultimate rely on the AMD Xilinx Artix-7 XC7A50T field-programmable gate array. For the Commodore 77, the engineering team swapped that silicon out for the next-tier Artix-7 XC7A100T.
That architectural shift doubles the available logic, doubles the block RAM capacity, and expands the I/O footprint. According to official announcements from Commodore, this robust hardware lift pushes internal performance targets to an estimated 77 MHz. That marks a leap over the original Commodore 64’s 1 MHz processor speed.
The system remains compatible with 99.9%+ of the software catalog built for the original C64 ecosystem.
Night City Aesthetics Meet Retro Silicon
The visual design leans heavily into the industrial grit of CD Projekt Red’s dystopian universe. A brushed metal plate sits neatly to the right of the keyboard deck, breaking up the classic beige aesthetic associated with older breadbin chassis designs.

The physical casing also features a smoked gray translucent base equipped with LEDs. These lights dynamically sync and pulse during audio playback. Other physical upgrades include a custom neon power light, themed packaging, collectible pins, stickers, and a spiral-bound user guide packed with lore and custom type-in BASIC programs.
Turning on the machine triggers an exclusive, Cyberpunk-themed Commodore 77 BASIC 2.0 boot screen alongside customized menu color palettes.

Buyers receive an exclusive 2MB physical demo cartridge designed to mimic the data shards found throughout Night City. Crafted by the Polish C64 demo group Arise, the non-interactive showcase pushes 1982 hardware limits to display real-time graphical tricks.
The audio experience relies on the C64U’s built-in 24 channels of stereo SID chip music. The soundtrack is composed by chiptune artist LukHash, whose previous album CyberChip was recorded entirely on original Commodore 64 hardware.
