Common Glitches in Parking Sensor Systems: Electromagnetic vs Ultrasonic Sensors

If previously parking sensors were available only for premium cars, now they are installed in almost any car, including budget LADA models. This is great when the system warns of approaching an obstacle, protecting the driver from a possible collision.

However, despite this, parking sensors are often subject to “glitches” and can sometimes mislead the driver. Here are some examples of this behavior.

There are several types of parking assistance systems, usually divided into electromagnetic and ultrasonic. The former are less effective in detecting objects at a distance. Such sensors have a limited detection radius, for example, 70-80 centimeters to an obstacle, while ultrasonic ones can detect danger a couple of meters away.

In addition, electromagnetic sensors do not always determine on which side an obstacle awaits the driver.

Their increased sensitivity can cause false alarms. However, the main disadvantage is the inability to work statically. In other words, in order to activate the parking sensors, you need to move, which in some maneuvers and in the absence of experience can lead to damage to the bumper.

However, ultrasonic devices are also not an ideal solution. They do not always respond to thin and small objects, such as a miniature post or tree branch. However, moreover, these devices sometimes do not detect obstacles up to one meter high.

Of course, the efficiency of the system depends on the number of sensors and the width of their coverage. However, some obstacles can reflect an ultrasonic signal, and the driver becomes aware of this after a characteristic crunching sound. This not only applies to inclined surfaces and altered terrain, but also to simple snowdrifts or bushes.

It’s not for nothing that they say: trust, but verify. Therefore, it is best to be careful and assess the situation with your own eyes.
