Commuting with the Salzburg local train

“Relaxed commuting” – this slogan is true in that the inclined passenger swings between anger and despair in a relaxed manner in view of the disastrous information practices of those responsible for the SLB. Changes to timetables are apparently top secret and must under no circumstances be published before they come into force.

The rail replacement service between Oberndorf and Eching was originally planned for October and was then extended at short notice until December 2nd. On Friday, December 1st, 2023, no passenger and apparently no conductor knew which timetable was valid for Monday. On Saturday, the ORF reported that the rail replacement service (SEV) between Oberndorf and Eching had been extended until further notice. Why this is the case and how long it will remain this way is obviously not worth telling those who suffer.

Passengers from the direction of Ostermiething are expected to stand for around 12 minutes directly on the main road, without any shelter, because the SLB cannot or does not want to manage to keep the SEV and the trains running properly. The travel time (let’s just call it that) is extended by a total of around 25 minutes each way. For commuters, this means around 50 minutes of additional travel time per day, not counting missed connections at the main station. So much for a relaxed commute.

A side detail: The fact that there were no trains running on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 due to the snowfall was not worth mentioning on the local railway’s homepage (yes, dear people in charge, they have one of those!). The passenger waiting in vain at the stop had to see this for himself from the tracks covered in deep snow. The same homepage advertises express trains between Ostermiething and Salzburg, which actually used to exist. Younger semesters only know these from stories.

A final question after so much talk about the planned S-Link: Who should be the operator, such as the local railway? Then you don’t need rails, which would only be a hindrance to (foreseeable) rail replacement traffic anyway. And buses don’t actually need a tunnel.
