Compañía Sud Americana de Dragados finished its works for the arrival of cruise ships

Buenos Aires is experiencing a historic Cruise Season, recovering pre-pandemic levels and projecting to exceed the 2019 record.

In this context, Compañía Sud Americana de Dragados -local subsidiary of Jan De Nul Group- reported that it has deployed its technical capacity and its state-of-the-art vessels to carry out the dredging and maintenance works necessary to guarantee the navigability and operability of the Port of Buenos Aires.

Contracted by the AGP, the company finalized this week the adaptation tasks in the Passage Canal and Turning Circle of the Port of Buenos Aires, in which it is estimated that close to a million cubic meters of material were extracted.

The work was carried out by the the insignia Ortelius, equipped with an ultra-low emission control system, called ULEv (Ultra Low Emissions vehicle), which makes it an “ecological dredge”.

There was a record number of passengers on cruise ships that arrived in Argentina in January

The Ortelius is 111.7 meters long and 24.6 meters wide. It has 6,000 cubic meters of capacity, acts as a suction hopper dredger and can dredge to a maximum depth of 35 meters.

Recently built according to European Union Phase V requirements and Tier III standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), this ship is powered by diesel-electric engines and has a two-stage catalytic filter system, which renders nitrogen oxides harmless, and a soot filter that blocks the finest particles.

cruise season

According to the report presented by the City Tourism Entity, the cruise season in Buenos Aires began recovering pre-pandemic activity levels and is projected to exceed the 2019 record.

They wait more than 120 cruises mobilizing more than 350,000 passengers, an improvement compared to the 2018-2019 season, when 8% fewer vessels called.

The season starts in October and lasts until April. Of the expected passengers, more than 70% are foreigners, especially from Brazil, the United States and Canada and Europe. The daily cost of each passenger is estimated at 90.6 dollars, an important injection of foreign currency for the local economy.

In addition, thanks to the dredging work carried out by Compañía Sud Americana de Dragados this year, bigger boats are coming: 47% of the calls will be cruise ships with more than 3,000 passengers. In relation to the 2019-20 season, the calls of large ships will increase by 9% in 2022-23.

In this way, the tourism sector has been showing a sustained recovery in Buenos Aires and the port and cruise ships are one of the main gateways for foreign tourists who leave foreign currency, boosting the national economy.

In addition, the port of Buenos Aires is a strategic point for the country, with the opportunity to expand and continue to grow, promoting port and maritime activity, one of the keys to the development and production of Argentina, and for this, Compañía Sud Americana de Dragados -with the support of Jan De Nul Group- is positioned as a strategic ally to continue improving logistics, guaranteeing the navigability and connectivity of the country with the world.
