Comparative Review: Ranking Supermarket Ground Coffees for Taste, Packaging, and Value

2023-09-30 13:04:00

New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, we tested ground coffee.

Appearance of the packaging: Intermarché plays on black and red, which gives a high-end look to the product. For Delhaize, we are in the purest style of the brand, simple and effective. For Aldi, it was very simple and the graphic has aged poorly. In addition, the brown color of the packet is more reminiscent of cocoa. At Carrefour, the product was well highlighted, without overdoing it. As for the Lidl package, it was very simple and old fashioned, but it works. For Colruyt, it was very simple – a white product – but it got to the point. Finally, the Douwe Egberts package can be seen directly in relation to the others, a reference.

The big brand test: the big brand outclassed by a white product for mint syrup (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the product: for Intermarché, you get a nice foam and the smell is strong but very pleasant. It was more subtle for Delhaize, even if the foam was less “gourmet”. At Aldi, we found a nice foam, but the smell was much too bitter and without any real coffee smell. For Carrefour, we found this typical coffee smell, but it was a little too acidic. For the Lidl product, it already made you want more, but it was very light. Still quite light, but subtle at Colruyt. For the big brand, it’s several notches above the competition, with a captivating scent.

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score B for everyone, a quality product that should not be abused either.

The big test of brands: rare people fall in love with chocolate éclairs (COMPARATIVE)

Readability of the label: for Intermarché, it was too difficult to read, on a black background which doesn’t help. For Delhaize, it’s okay but a little small. On the Aldi side, it was readable, but too much continuous text to find information quickly. Same comment for Carrefour, but it was much less readable. At Lidl, we were treated to a lot of language on the package, but very little information. Colruyt deserves the best rating, it was perfect. For the big brand, no effort has been made to make it easier for the consumer.

Taste: the Intermarché product is very bitter but of good quality all the same. It was a step above at Delhaize, with a rounder, more subtle taste. For Aldi, it was strong and bitter, but without any coffee taste. We found a more pleasant coffee taste for the Carrefour product, but it was still very, very strong. We left with a very light coffee for Lidl, but it was still very decent and all-purpose. Same observation for Colruyt. For the big brand, it was a little bitter, but with a nice, very pleasant length.

Value for money: for a 250 g package, you must count, in order: Colruyt (€1.69), Intermarché (€2.35), Carrefour (€2.49), Lidl (€2.64 €), Delhaize (€3.19), Aldi (€3.49) and Douwe Egberts (€3.75).
