Compare Lenovo Yoga 770 AMD vs M1 MacBook Air

Lenovo Yoga 770 vs. MacBook Air with M1 Chip: Benchmarks and Prices

This time, there are items that have been benchmarked again for comparison, so there is a possibility that there is a difference from the verification result of the review article.

The price as of August 2022 at the time of writing the article is posted. This model shows the amount if the model purchased by the author is purchased at the current price.

Lenovo Yoga 770 can be purchased about 8,000 cheaper. Also, if you select 1TB with MacBook Air, the difference will be 218,000 yen and the difference will be large.

Benchmark result

Cinebench R23 is a benchmark software that generates computer graphics only with CPU performance and measures CPU performance. The higher the score, the higher the performance, but there is a possibility that the actual performance when running the actual software may differ, but the results are as follows.

In the latest Cinebench R23 (Minimum Test Duration OFF), Yoga 770 had an advantageous result with 9117pts in multithread performance. Yoga 770 was over 10000pts when it was first sold, but the score dropped after the BIOS update. The performance was milder, probably because the fan speed was lowered.

The single thread performance was 1490pts, giving the MacBook Air a slight advantage. Even in terms of single-threaded performance, the Yoga 770 is a little milder than when the review was written. However, I think that this difference can be said to be even.

In the 10minute test (looped for 10 minutes) prepared for Cinebench R23, the multiscore of MacBook Air decreased. Since it is fanless, the performance will drop if you apply a high load for a long time.

Even with Yoga 770, although there is a decrease, the score is almost the same. Single-threaded performance remained at the same level for both.

RAW development time verified with Lightroom Classic CC

We exported 100 24MP RAW files taken with α7II in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC all at once, and verified the speed.

Set quality to 100 with Lightroom Classic CC initial preset and export to desktop. The results are as follows.

model writing time
Lenovo Yoga 770(AMD) 1 minute 09 seconds
M1 MacBook Air 1 minute 29 seconds

The Yoga 770 had the advantage. RAW development is a work that is affected by the CPU’s single-thread performance, memory capacity, and frequency, so it may be that the memory installed in the Yoga 770 (AMD) is faster than that installed in the M1 chip. do not have.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC video export speed verification

We measured the export time of a project created for uploading to YouTube in the past. Full HD video shot with α7R4 is exported with H264 YouTube1080P preset and the time is verified.

Premiere ProCC has been updated to the latest version as of August 19, 2022 and implemented with hardware encoding.

  • XAVC S FHD24P(50Mbps)
  • Video length 15 minutes 11 seconds
  • With telop/cut editing/image insertion
  • Sequence setting is 24fps
  • Yoga 770 exports YouTube 1080P, hardware encoding
  • M1Macbook Air exports sequence settings match preview (mpeg) on export
model 24fps export time
Yoga 770(AMD) 4 minutes 46 seconds
M1 MacBook Air 4 minutes 42 seconds

When exporting with preset presets prepared in advance, M1MacBook Air cannot apply hardware encoding unless you use “sequence setting matching” using mpeg codec. Although it is in the same class as H264, the lack of detailed settings may be a bottleneck for video editors.

The AMD Ryzen 7 6800 supports hardware encoding with the RDNA 2 architecture, so it has the same playback level and encoding speed as the M1MacBook Air.

Battery continuous operating time

PCMark10 ModernOffice, which tests the continuous operation time of the battery, can measure how many hours it can operate continuously by operating compatible software of Microsoft Office. In addition, the results of testing with the benchmark function equivalent to video playback and game play are as follows.

Lenvo Yoga 770 battery test
PCMark10 ModernOffice 12 hours 23 minutes
PCMark10 Video 12 hours 16 minutes
PCMark 10 Gaming 1 hour 55 minutes

Possible. In addition, the results of testing with the benchmark function equivalent to video playback and game play are as follows.

MacBook Air manufacturer’s nominal value
web browsing about 15 hours
video playback about 18 hours

The Yoga 770 has a battery size of 71Whr, which is the largest among 14-inch notebook PCs. Considering the power saving performance of the CPU and the screen size, it can be said that it is a reasonable result, and it seems that both can operate continuously for a whole day.

PC body

how the monitor looks

Both are pictures when the website is displayed in the same size display.

Both have an aspect ratio of 16:10, but Yoga 770 has a wider display area, probably due to the difference in OS.

color gamut and brightness

Yoga 770(AMD)

Yoga 770 (LEN8A98) color gamut
sRGB coverage rate 100%
DCI-P3 coverage 99.9%
Adobe RGB coverage 96.0%

The panel installed in Yoga 770 is LEN8A98.

A panel that has a coverage rate of about 100% for cinema color DCI-P3 and can be used for video editing and photo editing.

It also has VESA Display HDR 500 True Black certification, so you can watch HDR content. Refresh rate is 90Hz

M1 MacBook Air

Color Gamut of M1 MacBook Air (Color LCD)
sRGB coverage rate 99.9%
DCI-P3 coverage 92.7%
Adobe RGB coverage 81.9%

Macs are shipped after being calibrated to Display P3 advocated by Apple.

It is ideal for creating videos and photos for devices such as the iPhone and iPad for the Apple ecosystem, and in that sense, it can be said that it is the most recommended PC for creators among the notebook PCs on the market.

Comparing only the color gamut, the Yoga 770 is wider and has a higher peak brightness.

camera

Two photos taken from the same distance are shown.

Yoga 770

The Yoga 770 is a webcam that supports 1080P and has a wider angle than the MacBook Air, so you can see that you can take a wide shot. In addition, the white balance adjustment is natural, and the white shirt is white, and the curtains are white.

A small whitening effect is also added, so a dedicated camera is not required. Image quality that can be used even if it is up with digital zoom.

M1 MacBook Air

Although the MacBook Air has noticeable noise in dark places, it can express people well and can be used as a normal telework camera.

keyboard touch pad

Yoga 770

The keyboard of Yoga 770 is a unique keyboard of a foreign-affiliated manufacturer that switched the US key to Japanese. “Mu” and “Enter” key are attached, or “no conversion”, “space” and “conversion” are attached.

The touchpad is also softer and more luxurious than the MacBook Air.

M1 MacBook Air

MacBook Air can select US key or JIS key when ordering. The layout of the keyboard is very easy to type and the feeling of keystrokes is also good.

The keyboard and touchpad beat the MacBook Air.

interface

Yoga 770

  • HDMI
  • USB-C(USB-4)
  • USB-C(USB 3.2 Gen2)
  • Micro SD card slot
  • audio jack
  • USB-A

Yoga 770 uses a 65W output USB- as a charger, so it is possible to use an external charger. One of the installed interfaces is USB4 (maximum 40Gbps) and one is USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (maximum 10Gbps), enabling high-speed data transfer and video output.

M1 MacBook Air

  • USB-C
  • USB-C
  • audio jack

Yoga 770 has more interfaces, and it is highly convenient because it is equipped with USB-A and HDMI as standard. For that reason, there may be a lack of points such as “smart difference”, but this is completely my preference, or as for the MacBook Air, I will use a HUB, so it actually feels like an even match.

Also, for Mac OS that supports the M1 chip, the maximum output to an external monitor is 2, and it is not possible to output 3 or more, so be careful when building a multi-monitor environment.

sound of fan

sound of fan
Yoga 770 (14-inch AMD) 43.9db
M1 Macbook Air

Yoga 770 is about 44db, so there is fan noise. Since the MacBook Air is fanless, there is no fan noise.

While the Yoga 770 has an advantage in terms of performance, many people will dislike the fan noise. If you measure in the power saving mode where the fan hardly rotates, the single thread will drop, but it will be stress free, so if you really care about it, you can also operate it in the power saving mode.

summary

Advantages of Yoga 770 (14-inch AMD)

  • CPU performance
  • GPU performance
  • camera performance
  • Monitor color gamut and brightness
  • Convenience of the interface
  • Cheap price

What the M1 MacBook Air excels at

  • perfection of keyboard and touchpad
  • fanless design

Yoga 770 shines with cost performance that overturns the perfection of MacBook Air

In the first place, the OS barrier cannot be overcome. That said, the Yoga 770 still shines in terms of cost performance when compared to what can be compared.

At the time of writing the article, if you try to purchase memory and SSD with the same configuration, you will need a difference of about 50,000 yen, so even if the keyboard and PC itself are excellent, it is difficult to choose the MacBook Air.

By the way, the encoding settings when editing the video measured this time are encoded in a way that is advantageous to the MacBook Air, but if you encode in the same way, it will be software encoding and the difference in export time will increase.

I feel that the MacBook Air’s superiority in creative work, including the color gamut of the monitor, is the Mac OS of the Apple ecosystem.

Both are low power consumption and long run batteries, so if you want more cost performance, you should choose Yoga 770.
