The verdict fell in this case which shook Conakry in December 2021. Imam Elhadj Amadou Barry, aged 41, convicted of raping a 14-year-old minor, leading to a pregnancy, obtained a reduced sentence before the Court of Appeal of Conakry. Initially denying the accusations, Imam Barry admitted his guilt when the trial opened on February 15, 2024.

At the hearing on March 14, 2024, the Attorney General requested confirmation of the sentence of 15 years of imprisonment imposed by the Mafanco Court of First Instance. The defense argued for a sentence equivalent to the time already spent in detention.

This Thursday, March 28, 2024, the Court of Appeal rendered its decision, reducing the Imam’s sentence from 15 years to 8 years of criminal imprisonment. On the civil action, the judge abstained from ruling, the civil party having withdrawn.

Elhadj Amadou Barry, incarcerated since December 9, 2021, will remain in prison for an additional period of 5 years.
