get ready for a night of laughter and entertainment! Conan O’Brien is set to host the 2025 Oscars, promising a fresh and engaging ceremony. The 97th Academy Awards will air this Sunday, promising an unforgettable evening.
A Chicago Connection
O’Brien, preparing for Hollywood’s biggest night, shared his fondness for Chicago, recalling his time in Wrigleyville. “I lived in Wrigleyville, and I was roommates with jeff Garlin from ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ And I lived at the very top floor, and he used to make me carry his laundry all the way up the stairs,” O’Brien said. This anecdote highlights his early days and the comedic camaraderie he experienced.
Beyond sharing living spaces, O’Brien’s connection to Chicago runs deeper. “I did a show there with friends of mine, Robert Schimel, Bob Odenkirk. We did a show, ‘Happy Happy Good Show.’ Chicago just is my happy place; it really is. it’s really smart audiences, but also welcoming and warm.” This showcases the city’s influence on his comedic roots and his gratitude for its vibrant culture.
Improv and Irish Dancing: Conan’s Chicago Tales
O’Brien also reminisced about his experience learning to Irish dance in Chicago, leading to a comical mishap. “Regrettably, I did, one of the lower moments of my career, as I’m doing the big kicks. And there’s a line of lovely young ladies,” O’Brien said. “I kick her in the back of the head, but she was fine. I took her to Twin Anchors; I paid her off in ribs.” This humorous recollection exemplifies his ability to find humor in unexpected situations, a skill that has defined his career.
He further emphasized the importance of embracing mistakes, stating, “In comedy, mistakes are gold. So,if something goes a little wrong, don’t be afraid. It’s an chance to let the audience know that I saw it, too. So, that’s where all that improv training can come in, I hope.” This philosophy underscores his comedic approach and his ability to connect with audiences through authenticity and improvisation.
A Visit with Hosea Sanders?
O’Brien expressed his admiration for Hosea Sanders, saying, “I admire you and everything you’ve got going on, and I want to get inside that apartment someday and hang out because that looks like the coolest club in the world,” he said. “I was feeling a little down, feeling like I won’t show on Sunday for the Oscars, and then I see you, and your joy, and the way you live, and your style and I’m ready to keep going.” This interaction reveals O’Brien’s genuine appreciation for others and his ability to find inspiration in everyday life.

Conan O’Brien’s Warm-Up: A Chat Before the 97th Academy Awards
Welcome, Conan! We’re thrilled to have you hosting the 97th Academy Awards. What are you most excited about for this year’s ceremony?
Thank you! I’m really excited about the chance to be a part of such a timeless event. I think the most exciting part is the energy that comes with bringing everyone together to celebrate the best in film. It’s like the Super Bowl of entertainment!
You’ve got a rich history with Chicago. How has that influenced your comedy and approach to hosting?
Chicago has been incredibly influential in my comedy career. It’s a city that nurtures comedy, and I was fortunate to learn and grow there. I did shows with legends like Robert Schimel and Bob Odenkirk at iO Theater. The city’s unique blend of smart audiences and warm welcoming attitude has stayed with me all these years. I’m hoping some of that Chicago spirit comes through during my hosting gig this Sunday.
Oh gosh, where do I begin? So, there I was, attempting to master some Irish dance moves – and let’s be real, I was never destined for dance floors. Mid-routine, I lost my balance, and in an horrifying display of coordination, my foot connected with the back of a poor woman’s head. She was a trooper – walking it off like a champ. Fortunately, I had some ribs on me to make amends. It’s all about turning those mistakes into moments that make us laugh!
Speaking of embracing mistakes, you’ve been an advocate of improv as a tool for recovery and engagement. How will you use that philosophy during the Oscars?
Improv has always been my safety net, and I believe it’s the secret weapon for any performer. on Sunday, if something doesn’t go as planned – and let’s face it, with live TV, something always happens – I’m going to lean into that. I’ll acknowledge it, even poke a little fun, and turn it into an opportunity to connect with the audience. The key is making everyone feel we’re in this together, warts and all.
Conan, we certainly know you’re a fan of Hosea Sanders. If you could have him over for a viewing party, what movie snacks would you serve?
Well, first off, I’d want to make sure Hosea felt right at home. So, we’d have to start with a spread of his favorite soul food classics – think mac ‘n’ cheese, collard greens, and some flavorful fried chicken. But since we’re celebrating the best in film,I’d also throw in some classic movie munchies – you can’t go wrong with popcorn, candy, and plenty of those little chocolate Oscars!
