Rocked out and still homely: “Ghostwoman” enriched our Tuesday evening at the Chelsea!

For my first concert visit of the new year, I chose the Chelsea and the band “Ghostwoman”, whose music I had totally fallen for days and weeks before. My expectations were a little higher because I really wanted to experience and feel my favorite song(s) really beautifully.

But before the anticipatory thriller started, we first got to enjoy the support act “angle grinder“. And this performance was, to put it in one word, experimental. The kind that makes you feel a bit lost – was it just a long, distorted note, or was it already a song? That’s why I went out to the bar in the meantime.

At some point I went back to the front row and I was ready. I was advised in advance to use hearing protection because “it could get pretty loud.” as the duo “ghostwoman“Then we entered the stage, the guitar started clattering and the drums were pounding next to our heads, I also noticed that it was really quite booming. uff. What I also noticed: it was very, very, very dark on stage.

OK, so it was dark and a bit noisy – the band wasn’t necessarily that visible all the time, but the songs were still recognizable most of the time. At least the melodies on the guitar. Unfortunately, singer Evan John Uschenko’s voice was a bit lost and could only be heard muffled. But pretty much every sequence of guitar notes was a relief – we got melodies to hold on to, to nod along to, to drift off.

The highlights in this secluded set were mainly the galloping, fuzzy guitar melodies, but also the rare moments in which Evan John Uschenko held his guitar up or approached the front edge of the stage and thus the audience. And of course the hit, namely the number “End of a Gun”, was what everyone had been waiting for. This number inevitably stood out, also because it was just a bit more reduced and less deafening.

The set ended with the song “Yoko” and I was left with a somewhat ambivalent feeling. I really liked the music, I also really liked the unconventional vibe in the concert room. underground, rocky and still homely and beautiful. But with this performance there was definitely room for improvement: a little more light to see a little more of the musicians and one or two requests to speak. and become a little more accessible, a little more open and less hiding in the dark. Yes, that would be very nice for the future – for the audience but also for the band itself. Of course, I enjoyed the concert despite all the criticism – I was surrounded by great people, by good music and happily started the journey home.
