toby whyle danced with his guitar and at the same time delighted us with the most beautiful music in the praterstrasse – a more than successful evening.
examine new locations in combination with a concert? this is one of my favorite things to do. Of course I was on fire when I heard that “toby whyle“ would give a concert in the new club praterstrasse. i was not only looking forward to checking out the concert venue, but also toby whyle, who used to be the singer of my favorite indie band “the beth edges”. Of course I really wanted to hear his latest hits!
when i entered the place of action i was still a bit skeptical: everything seemed very new and noble, quite unusual for me. most of the time i go to seedy concert halls. the room itself wasn’t exactly oversized, more like a bare, small club room for a nice party. at some point the stage light went on and the space turned into something very comfortable and magical.
toby had his band with him, lisa on the synthesizer and paul on the drums. the three of them bathed in orange-white-blue-green light, they fabricated a very special sound from vibrating electronics, raw guitar and toby’s soft, haunting voice. already during his time as frontman of “the beth edges” toby mastered the intensive dance with his guitar and exactly this dance came to the fore once more during his solo concert in the praterstrasse. I was impressed how the songs not only piled up acoustically but also how the performance became more and more impressive.
admittedly, i was afraid that his music would become too experimental for me when i read something regarding “electronic music” – but exactly the opposite was the case. it was exactly the right development that was needed to give his voice a musical home once more. hits like “no one moves” or “call it a night” felt immediately familiar and with lisa’s vocal accompaniment everything only got better.
but i probably liked “how it feels” the most – this song not only filled the room with the most beautiful sounds, but also with the best feelings. the result was a more than enthusiastic audience! and i was also really enthusiastic regarding this evening with toby whyle – i realized once more why i found his voice so wonderful a decade ago. how nice that he came back, how nice that he is making music once more. thanks toby!
