It was an intimate and explosive evening that will be remembered for a long time: high-starter “Cmat” performed in the B72 and brought us a legendary show!

So it was like this: I wasn’t actually motivated for this concert, but I wanted to do my music journalism job and understand the hype surrounding “CMAT”. So that evening I was in the B72 shortly after admission and was a bit surprised that the first two rows were already occupied. uff. This was a bit inconvenient for me as a short person because everyone already present was much taller than me. and normally it’s not my style, but that evening I jumped over my shadow and made small talk with the people around me – especially to check whether I could scurry to the front row for a few photos (and then back again immediately afterwards would be plucked). And: it wasn’t a problem at all, on the contrary, all of the people I spoke to were super nice. A big weight fell off my heart!

The musical part of the evening began with the support singer “niam regan“, who presented herself on stage alone with her guitar. Unfortunately, most of the audience was busy chatting. The artist even mentioned the audience’s flow of speech once, but it didn’t achieve much. But you shouldn’t blame the audience: Regan’s music was nice, crunchy country music, but unfortunately only with a few nuances. Still: no one deserves to be used as background music for beer consumption. Everyone be a little more respectful to support artists!

and then, some time later, “cmatcarried onto the stage from the very back to the very front, through a dense crowd of people. This appearance alone spoke for itself. I was a bit in doubt at first, especially because she was talking about the composition of her stage outfit, which she had bought in a cheap shop in Vienna – it didn’t necessarily look high quality. But “CMAT” also spoke of her doubts, because the B72 wasn’t really an adequate stage for an artist who already had two number one albums in Ireland. And so we were all a bit without expectations but also excited to see where the journey would take us.

The singer started her show relatively comfortably with the song “California”, but the tide soon turned: during the performance she not only shone with her voice, but also, above all, with her presence and her flexibility. She brought in a lot of dance moves – but it wasn’t just her who was trying, her band was too! Because their band, which was present in uniform, was very careful to convey not only the fun of the music, but also the fun of dancing together on stage – sometimes even with choreography! Very quickly I realized: I was seeing something very extraordinary! What was also unusual was that “CMAT” was given a cowboy hat by a visitor right at the beginning of the show. Of course, this was always used appropriately, or rather put on.

The further the concert progressed, the more speechless I became: I hadn’t expected that this performance would have such intensity. All the song highlights also had something to do with intensity: during “Can’t Make Up My Mind” “CMAT” jumped into the audience and sang together with the audience, including all available emotions. I was so perplexed and had no idea that this was just the beginning. Because what happened during “No More Virgos” was even more incredible and really hard to put into words. “cmat” jumped into the audience again, counted down and then every single b72 visitor jumped and sang! I had never seen such an explosive atmosphere, I had never seen a musician merge with the audience like that! I had goosebumps everywhere. that was really awesome!

From this point onwards at the latest, all the people in this room were one unit, there were no more gradations. To wind down, there were always low-tempo performances between CMAT and their keyboard players and Hui, which sometimes really warmed you up while watching. When we were asked to take side steps in unison a little later, shortly before the song “I Wanna Be a Cowboy,” it seemed a bit strange at first glance. But in reality it was really impressive the dynamic that developed when the entire audience was once again moving together and could sing along to every word of the cowboy anthem.

The big finale, of course, took place during the very last song “Stay for something” – we not only enjoyed this beautiful song but also an unparalleled emotional explosion. This emotional explosion culminated in a crowdsurfing performance by the singing “Cmat” and wow, that was really special. When the music stopped and the musicians said goodbye to the stage, a cheering crowd was left behind! This whole evening was in a super intimate setting and was brimming with intensity and craziness. After the performance I finally stumbled out into the night and just thought to myself: “Wow, did this all really just happen?!”
