Look forward to the sensational concerts of the most famous boys’ choir in the world! On Wednesday, November 29th and Thursday, November 30th, the Vienna Boys’ Choir will take to the stages in Altenmarkt and Oberndorf and bring unique Christmas choir sounds to Salzburg.
It is not entirely a matter of course to get such a sought-after choir outside of Vienna or the German metropolises to come to Salzburg during the Christmas season. Hundreds of inquiries to the Boys’ Choir’s management office attest to this fact. And they like to come!
About the Vienna Boys’ Choir
The oldest reference to a boys’ choir in the Wiener Hofburgkapelle dates back to 1296. In 1498, more than 520 years ago, Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and his court music to Vienna. This laid the foundation for the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Over the centuries, the music-loving court attracted musicians such as Mozart and Bruckner. Franz Schubert was himself a choirboy, Joseph and Michael Haydn sang as “substitutes” in the imperial choir.
Today, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is a private, non-profit association that does not receive any public funds, but relies on donations. Around 100 boys sing in the four choirs. Together they complete almost 300 performances in front of half a million spectators all over the world in normal years: over 1000 tours in 99 countries are on record. On Sundays they play with members of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Choir in the Hofburg Chapel in Vienna.
Around 300 children and young people attend the schools of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. The choral tradition of the Vienna Boys’ Choir is listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in Austria.
