At the Salzburg Festival this year, Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst had to cancel concerts and conduct Verdi’s opera “Macbeth” due to an acute orthopedic illness. On Friday followingnoon, a statement on his homepage made it clear that cancer surgery was the reason. Welser-Möst now has to cancel all engagements from the end of October until the end of the year due to an initial phase of treatment.

“Franz Welser-Möst must undergo treatment following the recent removal of a cancerous tumor, which will extend in phases between his engagements over a period of one year to sixteen months,” said the statement published today. The first phase of treatment begins at the end of October. “He plans to resume conducting in January 2024. According to the doctors, the chances of a full recovery are very good.”
