Confirmed Case of Measles on Viking Glory Cruise between Turku and Stockholm: Important Health Recommendations

On August 9, 2023, public health authorities in Finland and Sweden reported a confirmed case of measles while cruising between Turku (Finland) and Stockholm (Sweden) on August 6, 2023 (Vessel Viking Glory left Turku at 8:45 a.m. and arrived in Stockholm at 6:55 p.m. on the same day). According to authorities, the case remained in his cabin during the voyage and did not circumnavigate the ship except for entry and exit.

Travelers on the ship in question – a total of around 3,500 people, of whom around 2,000 are from Sweden – have been contacted by email by the Public Health Authority and Viking Line about the possible exposure.

Recommendations

People who have already received 2 doses of measles vaccine, or who have had measles themselves, have good protection against the disease, which is highly contagious. If the child has received their first dose of measles in accordance with the vaccination schedule, it is not necessary to postpone the second dose. Parents of unvaccinated children, unvaccinated pregnant women and immunocompromised people are advised to contact their health center as soon as possible to assess the situation .It is recommended that people whose vaccination coverage is insufficient contact their health center to complete their vaccination coverage.
