Confirmed: Great tit most common guest in Austrian gardens – Nature

2024-01-22 11:32:10

The extremely high number of sightings made it clear in advance, but it is now official: the great tit was by far the most frequently spotted at the Austrian “Hour of Winter Birds” in 2024. The annual counting project took place for the 15th time at the beginning of January and is the largest citizen science project in the country. Obviously it was able to continue to grow: with 27,821, there were more participants than ever before. And they observed significantly more birds compared to the previous year, as the bird protection organization Birdlife reports – although the long-term trend is negative. There are fewer and fewer birds in urban areas.
