Congress could convene CSJ and Appeals postulators next week – 2024-04-13 16:01:46

The Congress of the Republic was notified this Thursday, April 11, that the constitutional deadline for the Supreme Court of Justice and Courts of Appeal expires on October 13. In accordance with the Law of the Judicial Career Council, the applicants must be summoned six months in advance.

Accordingly, yesterday the president of Congress, Nery Ramos, received the report from the Council of the Judicial Career (CCJ) and did not rule out that the call would be made next week.

“It is likely to be next week, it is part of the issues that we must analyze with the Board of Directors,” said Ramos, who a week ago had expressed the intention of calling until June, according to the legal criteria in the Nomination Commissions Law. .

However, the president of the Legislature changed his mind because, as he explained, “there are established deadlines” and the law on the matter has a deadline and we will strictly comply with it.”

In this scenario, Congress would call for the integration of the two candidates next week and they can begin their process of electing the lists of candidates, from which Congress must elect the next magistrates.

Convening six months before the expiration of the constitutional period of the Judicial Branch is something that several sectors had requested, so that the commissioners would have more time for analysis.

The challenges

The CCJ report was presented by the president of this instance, Óscar Cruz, who also presides over the current Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).

Cruz acknowledged that the next nomination commissions have challenges, but they hope that the work will be in accordance with the law.

“It is a great challenge to carry out the work in a transparent, correct manner and in accordance with the Nomination Commissions Law; Of course each of the members, whether from CSJ or Appeals, must be based on these aspects,” Cruz recommended.

According to the magistrate, the report that Congress received is a requirement, but he hopes that from now on the call will be made and work will begin.

The president of the CSJ did not rule out participating in the new application process, although, he said, it is something that he has to analyze for now.

“It is a process that I have to evaluate, I have not yet made the decision to present my file again,” he said.
