MINOT, N.D (KMOT) – One program in Western North Dakota is working to actively connect older and younger generations.

Lyle Koller is the director of the North Dakota for Foster Grandparent Program, which was one of the organizations that attended Tuesday’s senior health fair at Elison Minot.

Koller said it’s a chance for those 55 and older to work one-on-one with kids falling behind in school.

He said they work with the teacher to give the child gentle wisdom, mentorship or attention.

He adds that right now, they have 20 volunteers across 13 counties.

“It’s a sharing, the seniors get just as much love from that companionship, as the child does,” said Koller.

Koller said almost half of the volunteers have jobs outside of the program.

He also said fears around COVID-19 have been an obstacle.
