Consequences for Putin: The Wagner Group’s Rebellion and its Impact on Russian Foreign Policy

The attempted rebellion by the Wagner group risks having serious consequences for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is the opinion expressed by the holder of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa, Dominique Arel, in an interview with LCN.

“I don’t think anyone could have imagined, even among our Ukrainian friends, such an unfolding of the situation,” he says.

Unlike other analysts, Mr. Arel does not believe that Wagner’s offensive was orchestrated with the agreement of the Russian president.

“It can’t be staged because it’s Putin’s humiliation. It is to show the whole world how much Russia is weakened, ”argues the specialist.

The latter mentions that the Wagner group, through its successes in Ukraine, has become a major offensive force within the Russian army.

“That a group like that rebels […]it is extraordinarily embarrassing for Russia”, affirms Dominique Arel.

Saturday’s events will have important effects on Russian foreign policy and on the war in Ukraine, claims the holder of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa. According to him, the perception of Vladimir Putin’s invincibility, already tainted by Russia’s failures in Ukraine for 16 months, is more fragile than ever.

“Politically, what seemed unimaginable is starting to become possible, that is to say perhaps the eventual end of Putin’s regime,” said Mr. Arel.

And the repercussions of the Wagner Group’s attempted rebellion could be major for the Ukrainian forces.

“Is the Russian army going to want to continue to fight in Ukraine under these conditions, with what has just happened?” Asks Dominique Arel.
