Consequences of Proposed Draft Decree Limiting Electrical Power to Linky Meter Homes

The government is reportedly working on a draft decree to limit the electrical power available to homes equipped with a Linky meter, in the event of strong pressure on the network this winter. Here are the consequences that such a measure could have for you.

Avoid a blackout, a widespread power outage. This is the reason which pushes the government to develop a draft decree making it possible to limit the electrical power supplied to the approximately 200,000 homes equipped with a Linky meter in France, according to The Tribune. If this text is adopted, it will pave the way for a test, from publication of the decree and until March 31, 2024, which will result in a lowering of the maximum power granted to customers of electricity suppliers.

This experiment should take place on a working day, for a maximum duration of four hours, “between 6:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.,” a source close to the matter told La Tribune. Linky meters will make it possible to implement this, to the extent that they offer the possibility of modulating in advance the maximum power that can be withdrawn by a household.

A power of 6 kVA generally supplied

What will it actually change if you are equipped with this type of box? Households with a Linky meter benefit from a power of 3 to 36 kilovolt-ampere (kVA), according to Enedis, the manager of the public electricity distribution network. Most French people opt more precisely for a power of 6 kVA, which appears adequate for a home of less than 80 m2, with electric heating, or “for a larger apartment but heated with gas”, specifies the energy supplier Engie.

We do not yet know what limitation the executive intends to impose on the French. But depending on the maximum power granted, a greater or lesser number of devices will be able to operate at the same time in your home. “If you heat yourself with a heat pump (PAC), it risks drawing too hard and therefore knocking out the power in your home!”, assured an energy supplier to La Tribune.

For an area of less than 50 m2, a power of 3 kVA from your electric meter is generally sufficient, according to Engie. For an apartment of more than 80 m2 heated with electricity, a power of 9 kVA is however recommended.

3 kVA, the lowest level available on the market

In detail, 3 kVA is suitable for a home whose heating and hot water are not provided by electricity, with a fridge, television and the most common kitchen appliances, apart from the electric oven, specifies the comparator of offers from electricity suppliers LeLynx.fr. This power level is the lowest currently available on the market.

With 6 kVA, it is therefore possible to additionally heat with electricity, if the size of the accommodation remains moderate (less than 80 m2). And you can further use a washing machine or dishwasher along with other household equipment.

Risk of seeing your meter trip

If the power available to you is too low to operate your devices at the same time, you risk seeing your meter trip and therefore your electricity cut off.

The experiment planned by the government does not provide for any recourse or possible compensation from the State. Customers identified “as patients at high vital risk” should however not be subject to any limitation of electrical power. All households affected by tests will be informed by post.

“This mechanism would only be activated if all other levers were insufficient to avoid a collapse of the electricity network,” the Ministry of Energy Transition told La Tribune. “Extreme cases”, if a risk of widespread power cut arises in the heart of winter.
