At least six people, including two firefighters, were injured Wednesday morning in New York following a construction crane collapsed amid a fire.

The authorities of the American city warned the population to avoid the area of the incident in Manhattan.
“Due to a crane collapse, please avoid the area of 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue from West 41st Street to West 42nd Street,” the New York Police Department said on Twitter. Drivers were also urged not to travel through the area and residents to close their windows to keep the smoke out.

The location on Manhattan’s West Side is near the Port Authority bus terminal and an entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, which carries automobile traffic to and from New Jersey under the Hudson River.
A video shared on Twitter shows how the arm of a crane attached to a building detaches and impacts a building located on the other side of the street, causing debris to fall.

New York Mayor Eric Adams is at the scene. The First Deputy Commissioner, Joseph W. Pfeifer, assured that “this might have been much worse.”

“When our fire units responded to the scene, we had a collapse. The top of the crane, the boom and a 16-tonne load crashed to the ground. There are injuries among civilians and firefighters, but minor ones,” Pfeifer said, according to CBS News.
“It sounded like lightning or an explosion,” described a witness, according to the British media Mirror.
People staying in hotels near the incident said they had been evacuated because of the fire.
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said the collapse took place at 550 10th Avenue, which appears to be the site of an apartment building under construction.
