Consultations with the physiotherapist soon to be more expensive: here’s why

Just under a third of all physiotherapists do not agree with the new agreement, according to information published Monday by the National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance (INAMI). Patients who go to these non-contracted professionals will have to pay more expensive consultations.

The new agreement was published on May 25, 2022 in the Belgian Official Gazette. As no agreement had been reached with Axxon, the representative association of physiotherapists in Belgium, the text was presented individually to each physiotherapist.

The latter had 30 days to indicate whether or not they agreed with the text. It appears that more than 30% of the physiotherapists consulted will not follow the established convention, which is almost double compared to the old one.

The latter had been approved by 83.4% of professionals in the sector. In concrete terms, future physiotherapists who are not in agreement will be able to set their own rates from July 1. Such a situation will have a direct impact on the patient’s wallet, since they will probably have to pay higher fees and a quarter of the sum will not be reimbursed.
