Today (24th) around 1:00 noon, contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan is expected to be discharged into the sea.

Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company has been working on confirming that the contaminated water is diluted as planned for the past two days, and checked whether the concentration of tritium in the sample taken from the tank is below the discharge standard of 1,500 bechrel per liter.

Kyodo News and the Yomiuri Shimbun predicted that the discharge of contaminated water would begin around 1:00 p.m. today when the tritium concentration standard is met.

TEPCO plans to discharge about 460 tons of contaminated water per day over the next 17 days by diluting it with seawater, and first send 7,800 tons of it to the sea.

Then, by March next year, we plan to discharge 31,200 tons, or 3% of the total contaminated water.

The IAEA and the International Atomic Energy Agency have put forward a plan to evaluate whether or not safety standards are met immediately after discharge begins.

In this regard, fishermen’s organizations such as the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives in Japan reaffirmed their opposition, saying, “The fact that we are against ocean release has not changed at all.”

Residents of Fukushima Prefecture and lawyers also announced that they would file a lawsuit with the Fukushima District Court on the 8th of next month demanding the cancellation of the marine discharge plan and the suspension of discharge.

On the 22nd, the Chinese government summoned the Japanese ambassador to China to protest and hinted at the possibility of additional import restrictions on Japanese seafood and food.

Environmental groups and civic groups in Korea are also raising their voices against the discharge of contaminated water.

On the 23rd, press conferences, protests, and one-person demonstrations continued across the country, including Jeonnam, Chungbuk, Busan, and Suwon.

Fishermen in the eastern part of Jeonnam will also hold a press conference condemning the contaminated water at the eastern regional headquarters of the Jeonnam Provincial Office at 11:00, and the Gwangju headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions will hold a press conference at 2:00 p.m.

The headquarters of the Busan Movement Against Dumping Fukushima Nuclear Contaminated Water is also scheduled to hold a press conference today to condemn and hold a citizen rally at Busan Station Square on the 26th.
