Continental Expands Aero 111 Tyre Line-up With New 32mm Width

Continental has expanded its Aero 111 aerodynamic front tyre lineup with a new 32mm width option, joining the existing 26mm and 29mm versions. Developed alongside Swiss Side and DT Swiss, the tubeless-ready tyre retains its signature 48 vortex generator cutouts designed to delay flow separation and manage crosswinds.

Engineering the Front-Wheel Boundary Layer

When Continental initially rolled out the Aero 111 in July 2024, the engineering focus centered entirely on frontal airflow management. The distinctive slotted tread pattern acts as a vortex generator, injecting high-energy air into the boundary layer to delay flow separation around the wheel system. According to the brand, this setup delivers up to 18 watts of savings compared to standard round tyres like the Grand Prix 5000 S TR. Hannah Ferle, road product manager at Continental Tyres, explained the strategic shift for the broader casing: The Aero 111 has already proven the benefits of advanced airflow management but this additional width allows us to bring those same aerodynamic gains and crosswind-taming technologies to the modern road cyclist who refuses to compromise on comfort.

Aerodynamic optimization at high yaw angles traditionally forces compromises on volume and vertical compliance. Continental maintains that the new 32mm variant preserves the aerodynamic performance of its narrower siblings while giving riders extra air volume. The tyre utilizes the proprietary BlackChili rubber compound and a Vectran breaker layer for puncture protection. It remains fully compatible with hookless rim interfaces under current ETRTO guidelines.

The Evolving Aero Tyre Market

Continental’s move into wider aero rubber arrives as competing component manufacturers race to capture market share in high-efficiency road setups. Pirelli launched its P Zero Race TLR SL-R earlier in 2026, positioning it in 28mm and 30mm widths with a 32mm option slated for later in the year. Cadex entered the space this February with the Cadex Aero in 28mm and 30mm configurations, while Schwalbe continues to offer its front- and rear-specific Pro One Aero pairing exclusively in a 28mm profile.

While pro peloton usage has seen riders like Tadej Pogačar favor the lighter Grand Prix 5000 TT TR for both front and rear duties, non-professional endurance riders have gravitated toward wider footprints. Modern carbon frames feature internal clearances easily accommodating larger profiles. By scaling up to 32mm, Continental targets this expanding demographic without dropping the core vortex technology.

Specifications and Pricing Breakdown

Choosing the right tyre width involves balancing aerodynamic frontal area against weight and mechanical drag. The expanded Aero 111 series now spans three distinct profiles:

  • 26mm: 250g per tyre, specced on select performance builds such as the Canyon Aeroad.
  • 29mm: 280g per tyre, previously the widest option before this release.
  • 32mm: 310g per tyre, featuring 48 vortex generator slots and finished exclusively in black sidewalls.

Unlike the limited-edition tan sidewall variant issued for the Tour de France on the 29mm platform, the new 32mm Aero 111 is sold only in standard black. Pricing for the 32mm tyre sits at an introductory retail rate of £113.95 / $140.94 / €128.95, aligning it firmly within the premium tier of performance cycling components.
