BANGKOK – The state of emergency imposed by the military junta in Myanmar has been extended for another year. The military regime that came to power through a coup on February 1, 2021 had promised to hold elections soon. After Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won a landslide victory in the 2020 elections, the military seized power in a coup and imprisoned all prominent leaders, including Suu Kyi. A state of emergency was declared on that day to deal with the popular uprising.
