Controversy over the Monument to the Soviet Soldier-Liberator in Plovdiv, Bulgaria: Latest News and Updates

A proposal has been submitted to the municipal council of the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv for consideration, within the framework of which it is planned to dismantle and relocate the monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator “Alyosha”.

A message from the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party claims that municipal councilors from this political force in the Plovdiv city council, Jono Chepilski and Vladimir Slavenski, submitted to the deputies a proposal to dismantle this monument by the end of 2024.

It is expected that the corresponding initiative will be included in the agenda of the session of the Plovdiv City Council on December 17. If it is accepted, the mayor of the village Kostadin Dimitrov will be obliged to order the dismantling of the monument by the end of this year. According to the proposed project, the monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator is proposed to be moved to the so-called “Museum of Communist Art”, where previously dismantled monuments are stored.

At the same time, the Bulgarian press is very skeptical about the prospects for approval of the initiative introduced by the two deputies. Consultations held with representatives of other factions of the local parliament demonstrated that the issue of dismantling the monument is not on the agenda and is not one of the most pressing problems for the city.

The monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator “Alyosha” was erected in Plovdiv 60 years ago. A staircase of 100 steps leads to the 11-meter monument standing in the middle of a large observation deck. Due to its location, the Alyosha monument is visible from almost all points of the city.
